East Coast producer Statik Selektah is back with his fifth studio album “Extended Play”. With 18 Tracks, 38 guest appearances (not including individual group members) and a total running time of just over an hour – “Extended Play” really lives up to its title.

The album is pretty traditional standard ‘Boom-Bap’ hip-hop – that’s not to say that it’s a bad album – it just not a ground breaking album. The sound of the album is engulfed in East Coast/NY based sound. In terms of production quality, you can clearly tell from this release (and previous Statik albums), that as a producer he likes to stick to a certain structure of sampling. Although not off the bat familiar samples – he’s clearly crafted his sounds to accommodate his guests. While there is not one bad song – at times it feels like there’s not a lot of experimentation gone into the project. This is definitely not a bad thing. If you’re good at something – stick to it – and that’s exactly what Statik has done.

The two stand out tracks for me would have to be the third single of the album “Game Break” featuring Lecrae, Termanology & Posdnuos. Great sample, excellent features, solid verses, you couldn’t ask for more. The second stand out would have to be the first single “Bird’s Eye View” featuring the legends Black Thought & Raekwon trading some great verses with new comer Joey Bada$$. Some other stand out tracks on the album includes “The Spark”, “My Hoe”, “Funeral Season” and “Love & War”.

“Extended Play” has more than enough guest features to make sure every one’s tastes are accounted for. While it is a good album and an easy listen … all of the features and the lack of musical direction cause “Extended Play” to sound more like a mix-tape and less like a well crafted studio release. Nonetheless there is some pretty quality production and some great verses – definitely worth checking out.
