JR & PH7 “THE UPDATE” ALBUM REVIEW BY CHASM

This German production team continue their quality output with their second production album, The Update. Continuing on from the much heralded debut, The Standard, JR & PH7 bring the heat once again with The Update, launching more of their trademark, spacious, soulful beats and more guest spots from the US underground than you could wish for.

You really can’t fault these guys production, it always sounds well mixed, crisp but still banging and always comes with loads of feeling and soul to it. This is good quality music, the only thing I would say is sometimes it is a bit predictable and safe, but they obviously know what they like and stick to it!
I think my favourite records on the album are the more lay-back ones, Hustle and Flow is a killer beat, it’s lower your blood pressure type shit, also the smoked out Do It For You feat. Torae is a great tune, Hammond, guitar and piano intertwined with Toraes smooth flow. They definitely have a really good ear for samples.

Overall the album has a more chilled feel than their debut, with more soul and RnB flavours throughout, which I actually really enjoyed. There is still enough street joints to keep it balanced however. This is satisfaction guaranteed for fans of NY style rap and sample-based underground hip hop.

Chasm is renowned for his work with the cream of Australian Hip Hop, Chasm has produced and remixed for the likes of Dialectrix, The Herd, Vida-Sunshyne, Urthboy, Thundamentals, The Resin Dogs and also co-produced the Astronomy Class ARIA nominated album ‘Pursuit of Happiness’.
