Blu may be a difficult artist. Never doing what the fans expect, never giving a shit about the industry procedures, like uploading raw and unmixed projects to his bandcamp, just to get it out there. But then again it’s not easy for Blu as well. He’s an extraordinary, unique and original artist, who created a lot of classic and inspirational music, but people keep bitching. Bitching about the fact that he is too experimental (for example on NoYork!) or bitching about him not being forward thinking enough, like I heard a couple of times about on his last effort, “Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell them”

Like Bill Cosby once said “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone”. Blu definitely doesn’t want to please anyone except himself. He’s doing different stuff here and there, showing that he is maybe one of the most versatile mcs out there. His introverted, honest and personal raps aren’t boring at all. It’s good to see that theres a mc who is not boasting and bragging about all that rap stuff. Not many people can do that without getting super boring. Blu can.

The album (which Blu already uploaded fully unmixed to his Bandcamp in December 2011) sounds like a sequel to “Below The Heavens”, his masterpiece from 2007, which was entirely produced by Exile as well. Mabye it is not as groundbreaking as BTH was back then, but it is so good to hear Blu spit over the sample driven beats by Exile it’s just a classic combination that cannot fail.

Exile is flipping records that other people wouldn’t even pick up from the dollar bin, he can create a vibe out of basically everything he is steadily improving. Definitely one of the busiest underground producers in years and no matter where you are located on this planet, Exile probably has a live show next week and a new project coming out the week after.

All in all the album may not be the most thrilling Hip Hop LP you can listen to these days. But then again it doesn’t have to. When I hear people say stuff like “Nah man, the album sounds like 2007, its way too regressive”, all I can say is: the man has put out 4 albums last year! So please don’t judge him solely on this one..

Yeah, Blu is a difficult artist but I guess that’s just the way libertines are.

With his drunken boom-bap madness with a 2010 state of mind. Dope beats, sick samples and twisted mini-korg licks, fueled with weed and Pilsetten. This is not your average Prenzelberg producer. Germany’s Suff Deezy is on his own shit. For more info on Suff Daddy click HERE
