Let’s just take a moment to appreciate what is currently going on in the thriving music scene of Aotearoa (NZ). New Zealand is producing world class contemporary Soul acts, and at the forefront of this movement, is quintet Sorceress. Sorceress, formally known as Funkommunity, have dropped their hugely anticipated second LP “Dose”; a beautifully crafted Soul Electronica album that follows their critically acclaimed debut album, “Chequered Thoughts”. “Dose” reminds me of New Zealand’s natural landscape; both are beautiful, stunningly diverse, therapeutic, moving and magical.

“Treat The Feel”, is my personal favourite off the album. Rachel Fraser delivers sophisticated yet understated vocals that are very effective in complimenting the beat. Fraser’s subtle vocals in this track emphasise and highlight the skilfully interwoven textured beats, produced by Isaac Aesili. Another favourite song, “Cherished”, articulates a pensive and musing short story that showcases Fraser’s effortless and raw vocal strength. Minimalism, again in this instance is very effective and Sorceress show no fear in stripping it right back.

“Freeloaddoubt” is a sassy song and Aesili manages to find the middle ground by executing what many don’t quite manage to do; that is, merge the organic traditional Soul sound with future electronic influences in a seamless manner. This statement actually applies to the whole album. It’s a beautiful work of art that deserves your attention. Do yourself a favour and purchase a copy of “Dose” on Bandcamp.
