AVERAGE RAP BAND INTERVIEW

There’s no more @Peace, it’s true. Young, Gifted & Broke members Lui Tuiasau, Tom Scott and Dandruff Dicky have rearranged themselves into The Average Rap Band and if you’re gonna miss “Girl Songs”, well then go play “Girl Songs”.

Regarding their new EP the “Stream Of Nonsensesness”, Lui and Tom have stressed in interviews that it’s not about consciousness or ‘Descartes’ which I had to Google – and learn that he is/was the philosopher who was dubbed the father of modern/western philosophy, the guy who wrote “I think, therefore I am”, in French, of course.

What inspired the concept of personally sending out CDs to people wanting an EP?
We just wanted to give the music some value. Since CDs are basically coasters and the market’s fucking saturated. We just wanted to make it a personal experience like it was back in the day. I guess some people have never had the experience. Never picked the liner notes up and read the lyrics while it’s playing. Related the art work to the sound etc. We wanted to give people that experience.

How many CDs have you guys sent out do you know?
About a thousand. Or maybe 402.

How many of your friends or people do you know have written in to get an album?
Shit, our friends don’t care about our music. I’d be worried if they did. It’s mainly fans. But some of our fans are kind of like our friends anyway. You start to get to know people on a first name basis and shit. Especially when they been there since day one. So shout out to those lunatics.

Do you keep memoirs/diary?
Only the audible type. I’d never make a song called talking to my diary though. But yeah, that’s kind of a large reason why we make music. To sort of document our lives. Because our short term memory game is mad weak due to years of substance / emotional abuse.

How do you stay sharp as a rapper.. or what do you use as tools to stay sharp as a lyricist?
Bench press. Burpies. Dragging a hollowed out car through an obstaclecourse. What you’d expect. That and bars. Lots of baaarrrrghs.

What is your favourite medium to write raps, poems.. What else do you like writing?
FICTITIOUS suicide notes. Erotic novels. Shopping Lists. Obituaries. And haikus.

How important would you say it is to read as a writer?
I don’t know. We’re dsylesix.

What is the relevance of a work ethic to you as an independent artist?
Pretty fucking important. We pretty much define our whole character upon our work ethic. When we ain’t working we start to feel like we ain’t worth nothing. You know? So, we work pretty fucking hard. We’ve written like eight thousand songs this year.

Who are your favourite people to cypher with?
Just anyone who is free basically. Not overthinking anything. Not giving a fuck about the subliminal competition of it all. People like Legal Money Mike, Hone Be Good, Lucky Lance (after his 62nd bar) WES (he actually 100% embodies the essence of the shit) Dandruff Dicky (believe it or not) Get Ban (when he’s drunk enough) Melo Downz, Raiza, the kids at Eddy Gardens in Melbourne. S/O them. I’m sure we’ve left someone off the list. Ummm. My old man. Just improvising with anyone is the illest feeling. The most non-bullshit form of communication I’ve ever experienced.

Who are some of your favourite rappers with careers you respect/wouldn’t mind if you got to experience some of those highlights.
Jay Z? I’m sure he experiences a fine cuisine. I’m pretty happy being me though. That’s pretty dope. We don’t open up a can of philosophical debate on what is consciousness. Let’s not bring Descartes into this.

Which New Zealand rap album do you love to listen to still?
To B Spacific.

What’s your definition of Grindin’?

Interview by Aleyna Martinez.
