It isn’t easy lately to get the time needed to properly digest an album like Grandeur by Apollo Brown released September 2015. There’s more to this music than just vibing to the sound of the beats; which are laced with the recognisable, sampled boom-bap flavour Apollo is so dearly loved for. The artists featured spit stories about their real, uncensored lives, with a sense of catharsis in their flow, indicating fans and listeners are not supposed to find these tunes on mainstream…anything. The album is smooth and euretheral, a solid exemplification of Detroit’s musical legacy. It’s lengthy but packs a lot of guts from its start; with features from, Oddisee, Dynasty, Ras Kas, Big Pooh, Freddie Gibbs and more. Clearly all the emcees featured have a lot of respect and love for Apollo, who says he’s more concerned about being a fan of the artist before working with them — what’s cool about a compilation of songs like these is you get to listen to some of your favourite rapper/emcees and then get to know a few more. For sure a classic release.
